iPads require an iPhone to forward SMS messages from the iPhone to the iPad based off this Apple help article
Cost: the latest new iPad with mobile data is £679 new from Apple and used is about is about £400 and based off the 6th generation iPad being only just supported and released 5yrs ago the cost per year of support is about the same £100 a year.
Cost for others helping is that UNLESS YOU HAVE SEPARATE VIDEO SYSTEM TO SHOW WHAT IS ON THE SCREEN then anyone helping also needs an iPad to make step by step guidance easy - so cost is not £400 for one iPad but £400 plus £175 for a working 6th Gen one. Buying a 6th Gen one would be a false economy as would go out of support in a year, perhaps two and cost more per year.
BT Basic and BT Home Essentials
BT Basic is £5.10 with a £10 cap on calls - so £15.10 - and BT Basic + Broadband is £9.95 with £10 cap on calls so £19.95Nominally BT Home Essentials is better value - internet about 10 times faster and can include internet for £15 instead of just calls - but the catch is the landline is internet based. It is a BT Digital Voice landline that will function little, if at all, in a power cut (best case scenario involves battery backup) and needs configuration. So BT Basic + Broadband is better tariff for now.
If one is in a town then usually of course one can find a neighbour with functioning mobile. But in the countryside digital landlines very much rely on having mobile coverage and a charged mobile phone as backup. Also some telecare devices (which can provide alerts in case of a fall/injury) rely on analogue landlines - not digital landlines.
BT Home Essentials is the Fibre Internet version of BT Basic - £15 a month with 700 mins to UK landlines and mobiles included as well as internet - £20 with unlimited calls & faster internetSimplified smartphones for seniors - mostly seems to be fewer and larger icons for the apps - and more expensive and out of date
Emporia Tablet - £330 vs £120 used or £220 new for a standard tablet Emporia SMART 5 £245 Emporia Super-Easy £195 DORO 8100 £170 The Doro 8100 has updates for 1 year until December 2024 So this £80 secondhand Doro 8100 maybe has a year of updatesMobile Networks - SMARTY is good as has good value options between £5 and £10 - others have none or worse
Lebara £5 a month plan with 5GB of data is pretty good Lyca Mobile £5 a month is also worth a look (5GB of data as standard) or the £2.99 for 6 months with 20GB of data Black Friday deal eSIM would work with Nokia G60 5G - and 3GB of data for £4 a month is almost sufficient (but not quite)
